A narrativa tem seu foco no relacionamento entre Therese, uma garota de 19 anos que tenta ganhar espa\u00e7o como cen\u00f3grafa em produ\u00e7\u00f5es teatrais, e Carol, uma mulher rica que passa por um div\u00f3rcio e disputas sobre a cust\u00f3dia da pr\u00f3pria filha. Adaptado para o cinema em 2015, o romance retrata as dificuldades que casais homossexuais precisavam enfrentar nos anos 50 para conseguirem ficar juntos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A afetividade entre as duas mulheres \u00e9 desenvolvida aos poucos no romance, o que acaba por revelar tamb\u00e9m um pouco da vida de Nova York dos anos cinquenta. O livro traz passagens onde as pr\u00f3prias personagens expressam sua indigna\u00e7\u00e3o frente aos absurdos que s\u00e3o obrigadas a lidar, expondo a lesbofobia por elas sofrida: \u201cS\u00f3 agora ela percebera o que j\u00e1 intu\u00edra antes, que o mundo inteiro estava pronto para ser seu inimigo, e de repente o que havia entre ela e Carol n\u00e3o pareceu mais amor ou felicidade e sim algo monstruoso, que as mantinha agarradas pelos punhos\u201d (Highsmith, 2006, p. 219).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ainda que o romance tenha sido inicialmente rejeitado por sua editora, Harpers &amp; Bros, por isso foi publicado atrav\u00e9s da Coward-McCann, e que a autora tenha utilizado o pseud\u00f4nimo <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">Claire Morgan<\/span> para n\u00e3o ser identificada como escritora de um \u201clivro l\u00e9sbico\u201d, alguns pontos positivos sobre sua publica\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00e3o debatidos no posf\u00e1cio. Em um texto sucinto e impactante, a autora revela que a recep\u00e7\u00e3o de sua obra afetou positivamente a popula\u00e7\u00e3o LGBTQ+ dos Estados Unidos, e que recebeu diversas cartas de agradecimento por conta do in\u00e9dito final n\u00e3o-tr\u00e1gico das personagens, como podemos ver no trecho:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cO atrativo de <em>The Price of Salt<\/em> era o seu final feliz para as duas personagens principais, ou pelo menos haveria uma tentativa das duas compartilharem um futuro juntas. Antes deste livro, os homossexuais, masculinos e femininos, nos romances americanos, eram obrigados a pagar pelo seu desvio cortando os pulsos, se afogando em piscinas, ou mudando para a heterossexualidade (assim se afirmava) ou mergulhando &#8211; sozinhos, sofrendo, rejeitados &#8211; em uma depress\u00e3o dos infernos. Muitas cartas que me chegavam traziam mensagens do tipo, \u201cO seu \u00e9 o primeiro livro assim com um final feliz! N\u00f3s todos n\u00e3o nos suicidamos e muitos est\u00e3o passando muito bem\u201d.
